A multi split system connects two or more indoor units to a single outdoor unit using refrigerant pipework. Each indoor unit has its own remote or wall controller, so you can choose a different temperature in every room — or switch rooms off when nobody’s using them.
Because you only need one outdoor unit instead of several, multi split systems keep the outside of your home or building far tidier, and they’re often the best answer where wall or ground space is limited.
You can also mix indoor unit styles on the same system: wall-mounted units in the bedrooms, a floor console in a loft room, or ceiling cassettes in an office.
One outdoor unit, several indoor units — each room set to its own temperature.
Both are excellent systems. The right one depends on your property and how many rooms you want to cool.
| Multi split | Single splits | |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor units | One outdoor unit serves 2–5 rooms | One outdoor unit per room |
| Exterior appearance | Tidier — fewer units on the wall | More units to position |
| Room control | Independent temperature in every room | Independent temperature in every room |
| Heating & cooling at once | All rooms run in the same mode | Each room can heat or cool |
| If the outdoor unit fails | All connected rooms are affected | Only that room is affected |
| Best suited to | Several rooms, limited outdoor space | One or two rooms, or critical spaces |
Every room has its own settings, so everyone gets the temperature they want.
One outdoor unit can serve several rooms, keeping the exterior uncluttered.
Combine wall, floor and ceiling units within the manufacturer’s compatible range.
Only run the rooms you’re using — no energy wasted on empty spaces.
Bedrooms, living areas and a home office on one neatly planned system.
Serve separate offices and meeting rooms without a wall of condensers outside.
Most domestic multi split outdoor units support between two and five indoor units. A few things decide what’s right for you.

The combined capacity of the indoor units has to match what the outdoor unit can deliver. We calculate each room’s requirement first, then choose an outdoor unit to suit.
Each indoor unit needs its own pipe run back to the outdoor unit, and manufacturers set limits on individual and total pipe length. Careful planning keeps runs short and discreet.
It needs good airflow, access for servicing and a position that won’t disturb bedrooms or neighbours — exactly the factors in our guide to choosing the best location for an air conditioning unit.

Not on a standard multi split system. All the indoor units share one outdoor unit, so they run in the same mode — heating or cooling — at any one time, although each room can be set to its own temperature or switched off.
Because every indoor unit relies on it, all the connected rooms are affected until it’s repaired. Regular servicing reduces the risk, and for critical spaces such as server rooms we may recommend a separate dedicated system.
Only if the outdoor unit has spare capacity and an unused connection. If you think you might extend the system — for example after a loft conversion — tell us at the quote stage and we’ll design for it.
Not always. A multi split needs fewer outdoor units, which can save on equipment and installation, but the outdoor unit itself is larger and more expensive. We’ll price both options where it makes sense so you can compare.
