Common faults

Common air conditioning problems — and what usually causes them

If your system is doing any of these, our technicians can find the cause and fix it.

Not cooling or blowing warm air

Often blocked filters, a dirty outdoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failed component such as a fan or sensor.

Leaking water indoors

Usually a blocked or poorly draining condensate line, or ice melting from a frozen coil.

Rattling, buzzing or grinding

Loose panels or fixings, debris in the fan, or wear in a fan motor or compressor mounting.

Musty or burning smells

Musty smells point to mould in the drain or coil; burning smells need an electrical check — switch off.

Error codes or flashing lights

The unit has detected a fault — from a sensor reading to a communication or pressure problem.

Ice on the pipes or unit

A sign of restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Switch the system off and let it thaw.

Troubleshooting

Why has my air conditioning stopped working properly?

Answers to the questions we’re asked most when a system lets someone down.

Why is my air conditioner blowing warm air?

Check it’s set to cool rather than heat, fan or dry mode, and that the filters are clean. If it still blows warm air, the cause is often a dirty or blocked outdoor unit, low refrigerant or a failed component — all jobs for a technician.

Why is my AC unit leaking water?

Air conditioning produces condensation, which normally drains away outside. A blocked drain line, a kinked pipe or a unit that isn’t level can send that water into the room instead.

What does the error code on my air conditioner mean?

Error codes differ between manufacturers. Make a note of the code and your model number when you call — it helps our technicians arrive prepared.

Why does my air conditioning keep turning off?

Frequent cutting out can be caused by overheating, electrical faults, sensor problems or a tripping safety device. It’s worth investigating promptly before it leads to a bigger failure.

Before you call

Quick checks before you book an air conditioning repair

Some problems have simple fixes. Try these first:

  1. Check the power

Make sure the isolator switch is on and the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.

  2. Replace the remote batteries

A dead remote can look like a dead system.

  3. Check the mode and temperature

Confirm it’s on cool or heat as needed and the set temperature is sensible.

  4. Look at the filters

Clogged filters choke airflow and reduce cooling dramatically.

  5. Clear the outdoor unit

Remove leaves, debris or anything blocking airflow around it.

  6. Still not right? Call us

How quickly can you come out to repair my air conditioning?

Do you repair all makes of air conditioning?

Our technicians work on a wide range of systems. Let us know the make and model when you get in touch and we’ll confirm how we can help.

Should I keep using my air conditioning if it’s leaking?

It’s best to switch it off. Leaking water can damage walls and floors, and an underlying fault — such as a frozen coil — can get worse if the system keeps running.

Is it worth repairing an old air conditioning system?

Often, yes — many faults are straightforward to fix. If a system is very old, needs repeated repairs or has a major failure such as a compressor, replacement may cost less over time; systems using R22 refrigerant can no longer be re-gassed with it. We’ll always give you honest advice either way.

Can regular servicing prevent breakdowns?

Regular servicing and maintenance catches many problems early, keeps your system efficient and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
